A crucial bill is up for debate in the state legislature!
3 key Climate Change bills to watch
The bill we are watching closely currently is The ‘Energy Omnibus’ bill: HB (house bill) 1645 and SB (senate bill) 1624.
We believe this bill will have the likely result of raising folks’ energy bills by introducing new incentives and rate-making policies for unproven energy sources that are more expensive than current technologies. Hydrogen, for example, is a decade away from being competitive.
We are also concerned with NG expansion of any type. Florida is already over 70% dependent on natural gas. We don’t need to expand that dependence, and to charge rate payers via cost recovery who are already hurting from increased energy bills which impact all areas of life. The best and quickest way for Florida to be closer to Energy independence is to invest in renewable technologies that are already proven. While diversifying might eventually include some of the technologies envisioned this bill, the technologies won’t be ready for a decade or more. Now is not the time to guess at which will be appropriate. Rather, now is the time to go after the low hanging fruit.
