Congratulating Gov Desantis on his anti-fracking bill, a look at some of our upcoming events, including Energy Whiz and Legislative Delegation Meetings, a look at our volunteering opportunities and internship positions.
A Statewide Call to Action!
Great news: Governor DeSantis has ordered DEP to ban fracking! But we still need to make sure the ban gets done correctly and DeSantis ensures that DEP follows through.
That is why we are tweaking our call in day message to Gov. DeSantis. If you already called, it’s okay to call again.
When a staff person answers or you are prompted to leave a voicemail, say: “My name is__. I live in ___. I want to thank Gov. DeSantis for keeping his promise to ban fracking and hope that the ban doesn’t leave any loopholes for the oil industry to endanger our water. Thank you again Governor.”

STATEMENT FROM THE FLORIDIANS AGAINST FRACKING COALITION
- "Today, Governor DeSantis took a bold step towards banning fracking in Florida once and for all. But there is still a way to go before this directive becomes a reality. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection should begin the rulemaking process immediately and be sure to prohibit all forms of fracking including hydraulic fracturing, matrix acidizing and acid fracking. The definition that has been used in several years of bipartisan bills, including Senate Bill 146, is the one that should be used in changes to rules that result from this executive order. We need to get this right and close any loopholes that could allow fracking in Florida. The health of our people, tourism-based economy, and our remarkable network of waterways is on the line. We applaud Governor DeSantis’ leadership on this issue and are we counting on him to see it through.”

Don't Frack With Congress!
State Senator Linda Stewart (D-Orlando) has filed legislation to permanently ban fracking in Florida! Representative Heather Fitzhagen has also proposed a similar bill, HB 239!
- “The fracking process involves a host of toxic chemicals injected in the extraction process which could contaminate the fresh water supply for millions of people and our wildlife. It’s just not worth the risks.”

Students for Climate Action
A former ReThink Energy Camper, Charlotte Stuart-Tilley, is organizing a strike on the steps of the Florida Capitol on January 18th to call for Climate Change Action!
"We, as students, parents, and friends urge our government of United States of America to develop a plan or cancel our withdrawal from the Paris Agreement to help the world get back on track to a 1.5 degree maximum warming target. We need to lower our global emissions by at least 60%. We urge our President and legislators to acknowledge this problem and act on it."

Legislative Delegation Meetings Are Here!
Legislative Delegation Meetings, which offer residents a chance to speak directly to their Legislative Delegation-- all the local and statewide elected officials who represent their county--in a public setting, before the legislative session begins, are continuing throughout the month of January. These meetings are crucial to making sure that environmental issues such as fracking are taken seriously by the legislators who represent our interests.
Here are some of the meetings coming up in the next week.
Tuesday, January 8th 9am-10:30am
- Suwannee County
Monday, January 14th 9am-11am
- Columbia County
Monday, January 14th 1pm-3pm
You can find a full list of upcoming meetings with locations provided on our website.
If you are interested in attending one of these meetings, please contact V Miller at email@example.com
Youth Environmental Leaders Program
Our Youth Environmental Leaders (YEL) Program will be kicking off again in 2019. YEL aims to provide instruction, perform public service, and initiate the development of ideas and long term solutions for existing environmental problems. YEL students will learn to enlighten communities on energy issues, and be able to address present and future environmental concerns. YEL encourages youth development by promoting citizen involvement through political activism, outreach and community service.
